Amy Coad practices insurance defence litigation with Carfra Lawton. Amy’s practice includes defending motor vehicle accident claims, property damage claims as well as claims against municipalities, schools and hospitals. She uses her keen eye for detail to identify legal issues, conduct thorough legal research and evaluate evidence. Amy works hard to serve her client’s interests in a practical manner, never losing sight of the bigger picture.

Amy obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Victoria in 2016. During law school, Amy worked at The Law Centre, a poverty law clinic operated through the University of Victoria Law School. There, Amy represented many low-income individuals in a variety of criminal, small claims, family and administrative law matters. Amy carried this hands-on advocacy experience and dedication to her clients into her articles with Carfra Lawton and was called to the bar in May, 2017.

Born and raised in Victoria, Amy looks forward to serving the Victoria community and building strong relationships with the Victoria insurance community. In her spare time, Amy enjoys travelling, stand-up comedy and spending time with her pets.

  • What is your favourite legal term?

Contra preferentum (“against the offeror”) is a doctrine of contractual interpretation whereby an ambiguous contractual term is interpreted against the interests of the person who provided the wording or who insisted the term be included. This principle is often applied to standardized contracts or situations where parties are of unequal bargaining power and is intended to encourage the use of clear language in contract drafting.

  • What is your favourite location to travel in BC?

Having grown up on the Island, I enjoy traveling to Vancouver and exploring the big city, however nothing beats the Okanagan in the summertime.

  • What is your perfect meal?

My perfect meal would involve some kind of fresh seafood pasta, paired with good wine and good company.
