Recognizing that the facts and individuals involved in each file are unique, Ecaterina Ungureanu combines her detailed knowledge of each file with openness and determination to find creative solutions to resolve disputes. Since being called to the Bar in 2003, her insurance defence practice has grown to include increasingly complex claims in the areas of personal injury, commercial and residential property damage. She also advises insurers on subrogation claims and coverage matters.
Never one to be caught off guard, Ecaterina analyzes the facts and investigates each file thoroughly. She anticipates different scenarios and puts in place a strategy that will move the file towards resolution while always remaining open to new options that reflect developments in the case. When a satisfactory settlement cannot be reached, Ecaterina will not hesitate to take a file to trial. She has conducted over a dozen trials at the BC Provincial Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
Prior to attending law school, Ecaterina worked for ten years in the administrative departments of research funding and major gift development at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, helping to obtain medical research funding and to develop partnerships between businesses and medical researchers.
How do you explain your job to your family?
I am hired by insurance companies to defend people/corporations who are sued, where the alleged losses are insured. My job is to help ensure that claims are meritorious and resolutions are fair to both parties.
What advivce would you offer someone starting out as an insurance defence lawyer?
Spend time to develop a strategy for each case, and strive to get to know the client’s needs. The challenge is to balance a vigorous defence with the risks and exposure on a file.
What is your deepest obsession outside of work?
The only obsession I'll admit to involves Netflix. I am unable to refrain from watching all seasons of a previously undiscovered show -- such as Breaking Bad or Mad Men -- in as short a time as is humanly possible. Otherwise, my deepest commitment is to parenting my two young daughters.
