Sarah is proud to serve on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Victoria, which she has done since 2005. She also serves on the Membership Committee for the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and is an elected member of their Provincial Council.
In 2008/2009, Sarah served as the Chair of the national Young Lawyers of the CBA. In 2008, she was awarded the Victoria Bar Association’s Pamela Murray Award, which is presented to a lawyer who has consistently maintained high professional standards and contributed substantially to the well-being of the Victoria Bar. In 2007, she was recognized for her extensive community involvement as one of the “Visionaries Under Forty” for Vancouver Island. She served on the executive of the Young Lawyers (Victoria) subsection of the CBA from 2001 to 2007, and was actively involved in reintroducing Law Day to Victoria. She also returns to UVic’s Faculty of Law several times per year to judge mock applications and to speak with law students about the practice of law.
Areas of Practice
Sarah’s preferred areas of practice are employment law, estate litigation, personal injury and insurance defence. She assists clients with non-union employment law matters, advising on the creation or acceptance of severance packages, as well as obligations arising out of wrongful dismissal. She also practices estate litigation, assisting clients with bringing or defending against claims made under the Wills Variation Act.
Sarah has practiced personal injury law extensively since her call to the Bar in 2001, and has acted for both plaintiffs and defendants. Her experience in defending ICBC claims has resulted in building relationships with adjusters and other defence counsel that she believes are significant assets in resolving plaintiffs’ claims. Her goal is to allow clients to focus upon their physical and mental recovery while she ensures that their claim is advanced in a timely manner. She believes that it is important to work in consultation with medical practitioners to ensure that all opportunities for diagnosis and rehabilitative therapy have been explored and undertaken.
