Dean Lawton has been a Sessional Lecturer in Civil Procedure and Insurance Law at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law and contributing author to the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Practice Manual published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia.
He is a contributing author to Recovery Magazine, and a panel member and contributing author at Continuing Legal Education Society Seminars and industry based publications. He has spoken at the Insurance Brokers Association of British Columbia Annual Conference and continuing education Seminars for the Insurance Institute of British Columbia and Risk Management organizations.
Dean had also been a contributing chapter author to C.L.E. reference text publication Advising B.C. Business.
Dean has also spoken about liability and loss prevention issues at meetings and seminars of non-legal professional and semi-professional groups. He acted as Guest Judge at Practice Trials for Articled students in Professional Legal Training Program for the Law Society of B.C.
He completed his advanced mediation training through the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C., and is a member of the B.C. Mediation Roster Society (Civil).
He also acted as President of the Victoria Bar Association, in 2003.
Areas of Practice
Dean practices predominantly in the area of insurance law, corporate and commercial litigation, and casualty work. His clients include a wide variety of domestic insurers, Lloyd’s of London Non-Marine Underwriters, branches of government, and self-insured entities. He has appeared as counsel in all levels of court in British Columbia, in a number of domestic and quasi-judicial tribunal hearings and in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has significant experience in mediation of civil actions both as counsel and as mediator.
