Aron Bookman’s insurance defence practice covers a diverse range of claims that often involve multiple parties facing potential liability. Insurers, municipalities, regulatory bodies and institutional clients all turn to him for claims involving construction, fraud, municipal liability, personal injury, employment law and human rights.
Aron’s successful approach to defending claims begins the moment he receives a file. Dedicating time at the outset to thoroughly assess the details of the claim allows Aron to take control of the case and develop the strategy needed to effectively manage each stage of the file. Combining the communication skills needed to work with multiple parties with his thorough preparation, Aron actively seeks out opportunities to resolve disputes quickly. He has built a reputation amongst insurers as a highly practical lawyer who will fight to have unjust claims against his client dismissed outright instead of negotiating any form of settlement.
Aron is a native Californian who began his career in corporate civil litigation with Fulbright & Jaworski, an international full service firm. There, he practiced in various areas of corporate civil litigation, appearing regularly before the Superior Court of the State of California and the United States District Court in Los Angeles. Since 2008, Aron has been the President and on the Board of Directors of Congregation Emanu-El - Canada’s oldest continuously operating Synagogue - located in Victoria, BC.
What is your favourite location to travel to in BC for work?
Being a native Californian, one of the joys of working Victoria is travelling throughout the province. I particularly enjoy float plane trips back and forth to Vancouver (in good weather). I enjoy my short trips to Vancouver to have the feel of ‘city’ life for a short period of time before returning to Victoria.
How do you explain your job to your family?
My daughters often ask me what I do. I tell them that I try to solve other people’s problems, but sometimes the only solution is to let a judge decide the outcome.
What is your deepest deepest obsession outside of work?
I have always been competitive, particularly with myself. About four years ago, my wife convinced me to try Bikram’s Hot Yoga. Since then, I have attended the 90-minute classes at least 2-days a week. It is the perfect balance for me as it is challenging mentally and physically.
