My Bio
Brian Hoffmann is a civil litigator whose practice includes both defence and plaintiff work. He has experience handling property damage (including subrogation), personal injury, employment, and insurance fraud matters.
Brian employs a proactive approach to handling files with a focus on achieving timely and fair results. In furtherance of this approach, Brian works with clients from the outset to develop a litigation plan tailored to the specific needs of the file. This includes securing key evidence early and seeking appropriate expert assistance throughout the various stages of the litigation. This proactive approach allows Brian to accurately assess cases at an early stage and continually evolve the litigation strategy to ensure the efficient handling of the file. Brian also utilizes this approach with opposing parties. His direct, clear and resolute approach to negotiations with opposing parties leaves them with no doubt about the case in front of them and helps generate efficient resolutions to the matter.
Prior to joining Carfra Lawton LLP, Brian spent seven years working in the construction industry while simultaneously pursuing his undergraduate and law degrees. His hands-on experience and interest in construction provides him with invaluable insight and knowledge of the issues impacting property damage claims.
Brian completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Ottawa where majored in Criminology and Psychology, and was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for highest academic standing. He completed his law degree at the University of Victoria where he was the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards.

What is your favourite location to travel to in BC for work?
I really enjoy traveling to Kelowna and Kamloops. Living in Victoria you don’t experience the hot summers or cold winters like they do in Kelowna and Kamloops.
-
What is your deepest obsession outside of work and why?
My family. I have a wonderful wife and four adorable children who I can’t wait getting home to each night.
-
What are your most satisfying moments as an insurance defence lawyer?
I really enjoy the process of collecting and marshaling the evidence and law so as to persuade plaintiff counsel, and more often than not, a self-represented plaintiff, that their insurance claim was properly denied on the basis of fraud. This is one of the most unique and challenging areas of civil litigation.
