Backed by thirty years’ experience, Dean Lawton is a lawyer insurers turn to for claims involving complex economic loss and catastrophic injury. Dean is also frequently called upon to handle unique and challenging claims that combine unusual facts and obscure or unclear legal issues. Never one to take any fact for granted, Dean conducts thorough independent investigations and applies his legal analysis to determine the best course of action for each case.
Throughout his career Dean has striven to build close working relationships with the managers, examiners, adjusters, and insureds he represents; and to advocate effectively on their behalf. As the firm’s senior partner, Dean takes an active role in the mentorship of junior lawyers and students; and at the same time benefits and learns from those around him; and he encourages the sharing of ideas and views on how files can most effectively be resolved.
Dean views mediation as an essential part of the claims defence process. He has been involved in hundreds of cases as both counsel and a credentialed mediator.
Dean believes passionately in the importance and protection of the rule of law; the role it plays in our society and in providing those with a grievance the opportunity to be heard. He is an active leader in the B.C. legal community having been elected a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia in 2013; and is a past-president of the Victoria Bar Association.
What is your deepest obsession outside of work?
Outside of work- and apart of course from the importance of my family – I must confess to being a squash enthusiast. It is a racquet sport I have been playing for 30 years and one that permits me an opportunity to focus on dynamics and human behaviour in a completely different way than one does with legal work.
