My Bio
Karen Orr practices insurance defence litigation with Carfra Lawton. Her ability to analyze evidence and facts while keeping an eye on the big picture allows her to suggest timely and practical solutions for her clients. Although she believes in the power of communication, negotiation and mediation to resolve claims, she is always prepared to go to trial if necessary.
Karen came to Carfra Lawton from a small civil litigation firm in Vancouver, where she developed her advocacy skills. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of British Columbia, and earned her law degree from the University of Victoria. In her spare time, Karen likes to read, cook, and explore the coast.

What is your favourite location to travel in BC?
I am slowly trying to visit all of the Gulf Islands. I find that they each have their own personality, and that they are all great for exploring by car or bicycle.
-
What is your deepest obsession outside of work?
Learning new skills. You’ll frequently find me taking a course or trying to learn a new sport. When it comes to hobbies, I’m a jack of all trades, and a master of none.
-
What is your favourite legal term?
Audi alteram partem, an administrative law term meaning literally "listen to the other side". It stands for the principle that every party to a proceeding has the right to be heard and to respond to the evidence against them. Justice cannot be done if a party does not feel like they were heard or had a fair chance to present their case.
