Laura M. Olsen

Associate

Laura has returned to Carfra Lawton as an associate after completing her articles with the firm in 2024–2025. She previously worked at the firm as a summer articled student in 2023.

Laura maintains a broad insurance defence practice, with experience in personal injury, health law, medical malpractice, motor vehicle defence, municipal liability, and insurance coverage matters. She brings a distinctive perspective to her legal work, informed by her prior professional experience in forensics, mental health, and addiction.

Before attending law school, Laura worked for seven years with Alberta Health Services, including on inpatient medical units at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. During law school in Saskatchewan, she was actively involved in initiatives that explored the intersection of law, technology, and access to justice. She participated in the Dean’s Forum on the integration of artificial intelligence in the legal profession and volunteered with Pro Bono Canada, contributing to projects with the John Howard Society.

Outside of her legal practice, Laura is a dedicated community volunteer with a long-standing involvement in minor hockey in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. She grew up playing hockey and competed at the university level, experiences that fuel her passion for coaching and mentorship. Laura has coached at various levels—including Team Alberta and the Alberta Junior Female Hockey League—and has spent more than eight years supporting and developing young athletes.

"Originally, from Winnipeg and raised in Calgary, I love spending time outdoors hiking, snowboarding and surfing. If I am not spending time outdoors, I spend most of my free time playing hockey and coaching with minor hockey associations. I also have a passion for traveling the world and exploring new places."
